Default Trans Temp question

I recently installed a Autometer Trans temp gauge. The needle moves as it warms up but it jumps sometimes from 150 to 180 and then back and sometimes even jumps over till it is bottomed out on the HOT side. I have the temp sensor plugged into the test port on the driver's side and pulled 12V power from the Trac control button. Is the gauge just that inaccurate, broken, or do I need to seriously revamp my trans cooling setup? Thanks for any and all help, it is needed!

I Have That Same Gage In My Car. It Goes Towards 100 Degrees When On The Freeway And About 150 Degrees In Street Driving.

Double check the wire at the sensor. If it touches a ground it will peg the meter out. The terminal lug I had on the wire was hitting a ground. After I fixed that it doesn't jump around at all.
