Default overdrive

What's with everybody saying not to drive around town in overdrive? Does it really ruin the tranny? Also, i hear not to kickdown in OD... What is the truth?

I'd like to know as well, I've been getting a little into racing from a roll (on an empty highway late at night only) lately and want to know if it's really bad for the trans and which gear would be better to start in (3 or OD?).

I think people suggest that if you will be doing city driving and the trans will be shifting in and out of overdrive alot, but I really don't think it's doing much harm staying on OD around town. I don't think kickdown in OD is very harmfu either, but upshifting at WOT into OD (4th) is pretty hard on the tranny

Dont worry, leave it in OD all the time. Occassionaly will put it in Drive, sometimes to see if it makes a difference. Anywhere youll only use 3 gears-for instance racing some1 to about 120? 1/4 mile maybe? The 4th gear will kick in often especially over 35 i believe, i dont pay much attention anymore.

ive read on this forum that kickdown from fourth instead of 3rd uses a different clutch pack that is alot weaker. also leaving it in 4th will cut shifts short by a 100-300 rpms, put it in d, and ull have no problems

Posted by James B. in another thread: A 4 to 2 downshift is easier for a 4L60-E to do than a 3-2 downshift. It is a single event of disengaging the 3-4 clutch pack. Downshifting from 3 to 2 has to release the 3-4 clutch pack and engage the band at the same time. There is a valve specifically for doing this just to make sure it doesn't let the engine over-rev trying to pull that off. Keep in mind that mechanically the 4L60-E is only a 2-speed auto with overdrive.
