Default What year for TH400

Im calling salvage yards and they always ask what year..Does it matter???

a one ton truck trans from a 454 will handle almost any thing you can throw at it. no shift kit, just the passing gear connected. until you go over 500lbs. torque don't worry. good luck

No, but make up a year and model because they don't want the hassle of selling you the wrong one. In reality they are all pretty much the same, especially if you rebuild it and put in a shift kit.
The junkyards around here have a ton of long tail th400's in 80's trucks and vans. Not th375's either.
Short tail th400's are more rare but better for a swap, if it has a bolt on yoke it can be removed and replaced with the proper slip yoke.

IMO the older th400's are more desirable..
The older th400's have cast aluminum clutch apply pistons. The newer versions have stamped steel apply rings.
I forget the year when GM began using the cheap stamped steel rings though.

Not necessarily. If you used the longer one, you could use your existing driveshaft yoke because it's smaller in diameter.
