Well, the plain fact is, they won't be the same mods. A big torque converter is all an A4 car needs to start on the road to being a contender. Add to that the mods that both A4 and M6 cars would share such as gears, H/C, headers, etc, etc and you'll find it takes a damned good M6 driver to stay in the race.

good question. i have a m6 now, with my new set up i know i'll be 10.2's 10.0's but i can't keep a clutch for long at all. i'm thinking of going the a4(turbo400 w/4,400 stall)and hope to keep her out of the shop.

TH400 is an A3. No overdrive, no lockup. It's one tough SOB, but is primarily for the track.

For drag race A4 is the best way to go. I've not been able to hold my own against cammed and long tubed 6speeds on highway races but I can easily take them at the track.

If your wanting a very strong auto with lockup/od contact Yank. I believe they are starting to offer complete kits for 4L80E installations. HPTuners or LS1edit should be able to rewrite the pcm for the 4l80e

i disagree.
with the proper converter to work with a lower gear (3.23-3.42) you can run a th400 all day long at reasonable RPMS
i have a 3.70 gear and cruise at 3000 rpm at 70mph highway speeds.
not the greatest, but i put up with it.
A4's just cost too much to hold power, IMO.

3k rpm to go 70 mph isn't for everyone. What valve body do you have? If it's the standard rmvb it's def not a great street car.

its a BTE i believe.
why isnt it a great street car? you can shift a 6 spd, why cant you shift an automatic.

and i did suggest a different gear to keep the RPM;s down.
i know at one point yank offered a converter that worked with 2.73-3.08 gears for daily drivers.

Okay. What's it like drivng a full manual valve body TH400 on the street? Can you downshift, or does it freewheel and risk overreving the direct drum?

im actually running a TH350. my post was more or less to the gearing portion of the post.
you can upshift or downshift at any time. the valve body flows fluid either way.
pretty much a manual, just no clutch, and you are missing a few gears, LOL.

It would be about as good as a standard 4l60E given equal stall speeds.

not bad,
i dealt with ~3k rpm @ ~80mph with 3.73..
to lose 10mph on the freeway keeping same rpm
but to gain A TRANSBRAKE

oh.. i may stick with automatic after all..

and isnt there an add on for a forth gear?
by gear vendors or something?

what stall is that converter, btw?

Gear vendors overdrive is like adding overdrive to every exiting gear so you get first, first over, second, second over, third, and third over.
It is very expensive though. New units push $2k.
