Yes, keep it in 3rd. Also having the tranny shift from 3rd to 4th is very hard on the clutches.

I run in OD at the track. I dont shift into 4th anyway. And for the other question, my tranny never whied even with the converter. Now it has about 1000 miles on it since the heads and cam install and its still not making any noise. I Do have a big cooler on it, but no shift kit.
