2.73s + stock stall.

2.73s + stock stall. I have a 97 z28 lt1 w/ stock stall and 2.73s. I was wondering, do i absolutely need to change the rearend or would a higher stall do me just as good as changing the gears?
What do you recommend for a stall for the 2.73s on a street car that will see some track on street tires? I want to preserve mpg as well.
I see some possibility in changing to a 3.42 rear end if ican find one, what do you recommend for that?
Do i need anything besides a cooler when i do the stall (Probably would do some type of shift kit and corvette servo as well)
Also, would it be a bad idea to stall an older trans? 118k? Im worried it may blow in the future and kill the tc as well.

i kept the 2.73's with my big stall and think it's been a great combination for the track.
it's not hard to hook up with the 2.73 rear for me.
with my 3800 stall I went from a best of 12.99 to 12.36

I would just do the stall and leave the 2.73s. Something in the 3,400-3,800 range with about a 2.5str would be good. With pure street tires (not drag radials) the 2.5str maybe alittle much traction wise but I think the car would be to much of a dog and feel alittle too loose if you went with like a 2.0 or 2.2.
