A4 not shifting

A4 not shifting I was at the track this weekend, and on my last run something odd happened. I had the car in D, but for some reason, it wouldn't shift into 3rd. It just kept hitting the rev-limiter in 2nd. I double checked at the end of the run to make sure I actually had the car in drive and not 2nd by accident, but it was indeed in drive. I was able to drive home without incident, and the tranny behaved normally.
My question is, what happened? The car is completely stock, and I was able to make 2 other runs earlier with no problem. How much should I be worried by this?
