Default TC Question

I have a 4L60E tranny on my Z and am looking to get a Torque Converter for it. I was talking to a friend of mine and he is telling me that I need to get a TC, stall kit and shift kit. If I am not mistaken don't you put the TC on for the stall, at least that is the impression I am under about them, so I don't see why I would need a stall kit. Maybe I just don't know the difference between a stall kit and a TC. Let me know what I am missing about this. Because I am probably for sure going to end up getting the TC and shift kit.

Search.

When people say a "stall" or "stall converter" what they are referring to is the torque converter. People just call it that because the converter has a rated stall speed. You will want the torque converter, shift kit, transmission cooler and sticky tires. Subframe connectors would be a good idea at this time as well.

Again, search. There is a ton of information on this site.

There is no such thing as a stall kit, thats whats confusing you.

Basically a shift kit can be installed to firm up the shifts and make improvements to help the transmission last longer. The firm shifts are what you feel.

A high stall torque converter tends to make the shifts feel softer on a stock transmission, so people use shift kits to get the shift feel back.

You can use one without the other.

You will also need a way to change stuff in your vehicles computer (tuning) with either/both.

For right now I am thinking TC, shift kit, and then I forgot about the tranny cooler, but that would be done then too, I have some subframe connectors already on the way, and then after all this is done it will be a tune in the spring after all the snow goes away for the year, I know there is none now but by the time I get the stuff done it will be here.

yea no such thing as a stall kit-- thats just some yupy talking as if he knows what he is talking about. I have thoes friends too who are clueless on converters/automatics and say all kinds of funky **** and i just have to laugh... You now have some serious reading to do and have to pick the right converter with the right str (stall torque ratio) that is going to work for your set up.. Keep an open mind of what you might do with the car in the future and what i mean is that you will want to pick a converter that is going to match your future set up that way you pick the right converter the first time unlike some of us (me included) that didnt think it through.. What ever you do get a custom made one (yank, fuddle) and talk to them about your car and what mods you have planned for it.. A heads/cam car will need a different converter than a superchared/turbo/nitros car. I suggest you look at yanks site and fuddles site to get a better idea of how a converter works and what str means/does.. then call them up and see what they say, also ask on this board what a good stall would be for you...
