Default What too look for in pan?

I swapped my pan to a TCi deep pan, but I guess it already had a deep pan. It sayed on the back something about GMC, and it had the spacer to keep the filter low. Its alright though, I think the TCi might cool the oil a little bit of better, and I like the drain plug. Also the point was to change the filter to a better one.
Anyways, what are some signs that your clutches have burned up a little. I found some type of black sludge on the bottom on the pan. If I put my finger on it and moved it around, it almost looked like black paint. Thats not from the clutch packs is it?
