01 & 02 cars MUST have torque management deleted. 98-00 cars are kind of hit or miss but will usually be ok without any tuning or shift kit.

But you may notice the shifts become "soft" and feel kind of "sloppy". A lot of people (myself included) don't like the way the car shifted after a 3K+ verter goes in. Transgo shift kit will make a night and day difference. If you don't want to spend the few hundred more then a cheaper alternative is a tranny tune (mine cost $40 @ new era performance). They basically delete TM, raise line preasure a little and raise the rev limiter.

Do you need a shift kit or tune? No. Will you want one or the other? Probably.

Good luck

I would either get a tune or buy a handheld that can delete torque management and firm up those shifts. Although I think for a 98 you may not have tm

98's no TM, are you sure? Or do you mean no traction control?
