Default tranny doing something weird

well when I'm driving, it will start out normal, then it will kind of pulse like it is trying to shift or accelerate on its own, then it will just go into like neutral, what I mean by that is it won't do anything. But if I stop and shut the car off, let it sit for a couple of minutes it will start off like nothing is wrong then the process starts over again. Not sure what is wrong, but the car is smoking from the middle if the car about where the tranny is, I thought it could be leaking and dripping on the exhaust........................but mostly I'm lost on the subject any help is appreciated.

The pulsing makes me think air is getting up in the tranny (low fluid), or broken filter neck, or be several things, check the fluid level and color. The smoking could be tranny fluid leaking on the exhaust caused by a broken line, or the line has rub a hole in it from the exhaust.
