Default T/C clearance issues?

When I installed my T/C, the directions said if there was a lot of clearance between the converter flanges and the flywheel, to use washers. The problem I had was there was like 1/4 inch space and I was nowhere near a store to pick up washers OR long enough T/C bolts! So I checked with a few semi-reliable sources and they gave me the ok, so i finished because I needed to drive the car the next day. It's been fine I guess besides the car not being tuned for the T/C. My question is this, how many of you have actually had to install those washers between the converter and flywheel? Thanks guys!

Ive got a Vigilante 3000 and my instructions said the same .So i super glued three washers together. And hold them in place with a large pair of tweezers to start bolts. And still had to grind bolts to correct length. The purpose i guess is to keep as much pump spline engaged as possible.

So what's the worst that could happen if there was too much clearance and no washers used?

If there is too much clearance, you will break the pump!!! And in most cases trash the tc hub. whoops!!!! Hope this helps...

Make sure the flexplate is facing the right way. If it's not, you can get a gap that big.

It's easy to get wrong. I know because I did... Doh!

Just did this today, when I was checkin the flywheel I noticed I had it on backwards because I could see the weight on it, Im glad I caught it before I put the tranny on. I also had to put a couple hardened washers between the converter and the flywheel, I was afraid to pull the converter more than 1/4 of an inch forward for fear of breakin the pump.
