Some have good luck with th350's. personally, I went with the 400 because my shop told me that it is indestructable, and at the power levels I will eventually see, I will wear out a th350, not right away, but the 400 would most likly last a long time, with nothing more then fluid and filter changes once a year.

Plus, I bought my setup used off one of the guys that had a car with the shop... pretty much stole it for the $ I paid, so that being the case, it was a no brainer.

Im getting a th400 for 80 bucks!!!! Getting it built here, have a guy who will sell me shifter and console cheap. All I need is the converter, cooler, cables, pedals, flexplate, and some other stuff

Doesnt my M6 crossmember work with the th400, and what about the tourque arm..do I need to get a body mount?

And driveshaft...what do I do about that

80 bucks...you sure it will have the internals?

Sorry, the M6 crossmember should work with a small mod. The driveshaft might also work without any mods, maybe a new yoke or u-joints. (not 100%)

THe torque arm, you can either get a body mounted unit OR a new crossmember with a provision for a trq. arm. Yank has a nice one!

didn't know there were som many hanging around.

Just spoke to my local builder and this isnt 100%, but got quoted for a fully built th400 for about $695.00, $250.00 for installation without the driveshaft mod.

Gonna verify this but this migh tbe my answer. I wanted to add a gear vendor, but for the 695 plus the 2600 for the gear vendor, it'll run me the same for a fully built 4l80e...

AHHHHHH!!!!!! dont know what to do!!!!! get 'er done!!

I can tell you.. if you are getting a TH400 for 695, it's not gonna handle **** for power... the tranny's, in stock form from whatever it came from is a good base to start with, but for a good built one that can take 1200 hp is gonan run you about 2000 bucks or more, and that's with teh manual valve body reverse or normal, your choice, a transbrake, all that stuff.

If it was only 695 for a good one, that would be the only tranny that anyone would ever put in their car, it wouldn't be 2% of the performance cars that have them, it would be more liike 50%

mine would have been around $700 without the trans brake. it's good up to about 600 hp. i'm never going to spray this thing and i doubt it will ever be more than a heads and cam car in a couple years.
For it to handle up to 1000 or so it would have been another $400. the transbrake was $350 i think.

this was a quote that was given to me loosely. Not exact, but "off the top of my head" kinda deals.

I probably will speak to him again, i lat spoke to his wife and she estimated the price. SHe is very knowledeable but she told me that she was estimating the quote and that i should speak with Chris, the owner-head builder, for an exact number since she hasn't seen to many 1000hp th400'z

hughes does them, I'm sure that all the other big tranny companies do them as well, I'm just saying that for the $ you are talking I wouldn't trust it to last too long, sounds like they are using 4l60 quality parts.

You dont have to spend 2000 to get a good tranny. I had a 383 stroker in a heavy p/u truck that I raced for 3 years on a th 350 that I paid 400 to get built local.

I am looking at maybe going to a th 350 or 700 r from my 6 spd but hate to give up the shifting. T56rebuilds.com gave me a good quote but I am now fighting another Spec stg 3 issue. Tired of buying clutches and dont go far in this car any more as I now have a nice tow rig . More comfortable to drive and if I take my car anywheres , it is to race or play in some way or another where the auto will be fine.

Default 400 trans

hey you guys that are using th400s with automatic vbs listen up. the trans needs 12 volts at the 1/4 male plug anytime you are at full throttle. that is about 7'" back from the shifter. the trans will now handle about 500lbs. of torque. it doesn't matter if you just have a taggle switch and turn it on when you want to go full throttle. the 12V tells the trans that you are at full throttle. check the differance and you will be amazed. john

John- what's automatic VBS? Is this a 4L60 car to TH400 issue? More details?

I just ordered a Rossler TH400 full-race prep...installing it in a few weeks. I was tired of fighting reliability issues with the 700R4. It is the 3rd rebuild of the 700 in 3 years...AWD+torque+4K lbs=dead trans!

Manual valve body should cuure that 12 volt issue I think. Also allows you to keep shifting.... just a thought.

Default vbs

what l mean is automatic valve bodies. lf the passing gear is working it will raise the pressure and extend the shift point. l you used a good truck trans from a 454 engine it would do just about every thing you want. at one time the th400 was concered the best land vehecle transmission in the world. they were used world wide. you may by now have guessed it's my farorite. kilgoretrans.com

I chose to go th400 because I was tired of the bog and go or blowing hte tires off with the 6 speed, and I drive my car so little as it is, there was no point in the overdrive... never mind the fact that the car is headed for drag use only, I'm keeping it on the road as long as I can, but I know where it's eventually gonna be. Plus, with the power that we will be able to crank out o fall teh new stuff that's coming down the pike, warhawk blocks, canted valve ET heads, all the other stuff that is on teh way, 6.2 block, budget ls7 setups, all this power! No clutch company has been able to make a t56 clutch for our cars that will take the abuse that today's power can put out, and the tranny's are just not strong enough to take power shifting like they need to be.. all these things weighed together when I made my decision, and as you can see, it was an easy one to make.

Now, once I have the th400 in and running... just gotta find someone that doesn't see it the same way I do and get them to buy my 6 speed setup.

Puts out 385/385 on a bad tune.....Mods are F13, LTs, Ported TB, LS6 intake, LCA, Panhard, Tubular Kmember, ect ect...I think with a TH400 and a 4000 stall it would be pretty damn fast. How are you guys doing on driving your cars alot...what about gas mileage and things like that. What are your setups like and what can you suggest for me. I want to do it once and do it right.
if you are gonna make it a daily driver don't go bigger than 3,000 stall and 3.73 gears. a big shot nitrous will overcome this disadvantage at the dragstrip.

Damn, I went with a 4500 stall, and have 4.10's

good thing I don't drive my car everyday, I'd probably rattle the windows out of the houses that I drive by down my street after a couple weeks of that racket
