Default What to do?

When I have my car in Drive and I'm WOT, The car will shift at 4000 RPM. Horsepower ( at least stock) maxes around 5200 RPM, so I'm not getting the peak power.I have thought about starting from first gear and jsut shifting it manually, but I hear manually shifting an auto is bad for the tranny. I also hear that it isn't bad for the tranny. Also The RPMS seem to get up to the high 3000s,then stop, and then continue to 4000 and shift. Should I shift it manually? Or do these autos just shift that early? Or is there maybe something wrong with the tranny?
