I bypassed my radiator and just ran it through the cooler and it maybe helped just a tad.

I am thinking of adding a second cooler in series with the first or going with a truck pan.

I know about 8 years ago I got a deep pan for my Iroc and that sucker hung so low I sent it back... so I have been kinda up in the air about deep pans since then. I have also heard that the fluid sloshes around and foams up.

Has anyone wondered how cool is to cool? I hear all this talk about dual coolers and deep pans but when does it become to cool...

I would say just so the fluid doesn't get thick or freeze would be my guess....

I don't think it would ever run below 100 on normal driving conditions given the fact it is taking some heat off the motor......

My cousin builds these trans so I will ask him tonight.

Many are actually running to cool. Optimal trans temps are from 160 (the absolute lowest) to 200 (ideal) and no higher than 230 (the absolute highest).

Well mine runs a solid 180 plus or minus 3 so I guess that's ok.

I don't see how you can really overcool a transmission. Considering that heat kills a transmission, I'm going to continue keeping it as cool as mechanically possible.

Every piece of machinery has a operating temp to which it runs it's best. I cant agree with the statement above. You wouldnt want a engine that ran to cool so that's how I look at it even though it's apples to watermellons.

I agree, I wouldn't want an engine to run that cool. But an engine is doing something completely different than a transmission. It sees actual combustion, so naturally you'll see/need a higher coolant temperature.

Transmission fluid, on the other hand, is just lubricating internal parts, as well as flowing through the valve body to actually work. Way I see it, so long as the fluid is reasonably viscous, keep it as cool as you want.

I called up Dave @ Rock-On about this exact issue. You can not over-cool a transmission. When I start my car and the tranny is cold....it shifts noticeably faster and firmer than when warmed up. I have autostart on my car...so i warm the engine before I drive. While idle, the tranny doesn't heat up.

Anyone that has a converter should (for the life of their tranny) use an aftermarket cooler for the transmission. The factory one inside the radiator will not cut it, especially in summer. If you have a transmission temp gauge, watch it when you go WOT from a stop to 60mph....you can actually see the needle move up. Under those circumstances, mine will jump about 20 degrees in a few seconds.

The best way to keep tranny temps down is keep the converter locked up as much as possible. It will cool the tranny very quickly. Also note, that when unlocked, the tranny temp will soar. I had a misfire issue recently (computer issue) and it kept the converter from locking. around town (unlocked) the temps would hit 210+. On the freeway unlocked it would be close to 220.

Here are my operating temps: (all temps are once the tranny is fully warmed up.....20+ min of driving)

-freeway, normal driving, lockup in 4th: 125-150 (cold night vs. hot afternoon)
-around town, normal driving, lockup in 3rd gear @ 30-35mph: 175-185

-freeway, aggressive driving, multiple gears: 160-200
-around town, aggressive driving: 190-220

It gets pretty hot over here in summer, and like to put my foot in it a lot. So I'll be running a 2nd tranny cooler in series with the first, in a few months. I have the B&M 28,000 i think.

You use the stock filter set-up. I dont know what GoFast is trying to say. The pan is designed for the stock filter. If you want to run the truck filter that uses the deeper pan, you have to grind the nubs down in the Tci pan so it has clearance. People use it with both filters and neither will cause an issue. I've been using a stock filter for over 2 years.

These deep trans pans have drainplugs in them dont they? I think I saw a pic of one that did. I might have to get me one. Obviously it would make fluid/filter changes alot easier!
