Default Shifting Very Hard.. opinions needed.

I just recently bought a 98 Z28 w/ 60k miles from a dealership. The dealer said the previous owner installed a shift kit. It shifts very violently (i am used to shift kits and this is still that bad) from 1st to 2nd under normal driving throttle (1/3-1/2 throttle). Under WOT 1st to 2nd feels fine. When I first start it up and shift from P to 1st it jumps the whole car forward really hard. 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to OD is fine. What do you guys recommend doing? I want to keep a shift kit but this is too hard, something is definately not right with it.

hey it sound like high line pressure...we'd have to know which shift kit was installed ...we'd just be guessing without more information...get the line pressure checked..that would help...sorry I couldn't be more helpfull...Dave

Your not throwing any codes are you? With a 98 if the MAF is disabled or bad it acts exactly as you described. Don't know if it goes max line pressure or not but it certainly bumps it way on up there.

May just be the shift kit but thought it worth mentioning. Guys at HPT did a fix on my file so we could tune in SD mode without tearing anything up.

What is a shift/timing solinoid and how hard is it to replace???

That would be my guess. I didn't seat the MAF wire properly once and it shifted exactly as you described. Check the connection and make sure it's fully seated.

When my TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) was bad, I was experiencing the same symptons as you. Going from Park into Drive, it would jerk, and the shifts, namely 1-2 and 2-3 were retardedly violent.

And that TPS didn't throw codes daily... It would happen just every now and then. I eventually replaced it, and no more violent shifts, etc.
