Default help me diagnose my problem (th400)

I have a built TH400, forward pattern w/engine braking

Car shifts firmly from first to second, but hesitates on the 2-3 shift

it also hesitates when getting into Reverse

let me define what i mean by hesitates: the 2-3 shift is significantly softer and takes much longer to engage. It causes me to bounce off the rev limiter before it catches the gear

This is a brand new trans (bout 400 miles on it)...

what could be wrong? what should i look for?
i want to be educated about this before i walk into the trans shop accusing the builder of doing something wrong when i dont even know what the problem is

I would tell the builder that there is more than likely a problem with the direct clutch. This clutch is sometimes refered to the high/reverse clutch as well. It is used for reverse and 3rd gear. The problem is probably in that circuit. It could be a few different things as far as a bad drum, seal, or a bad sealing ring. It could also be a loose bolt for the center support. These are some of the things I would check if it were in my shop. Good luck,Vince.

is it possible that this problem would have anything to do with an improperly adjusted shifter?
