Cooler location also plays an important role in the cooling it provides. You need to have air being forced through the cooler fins for it to work well. The bigger surface area you have exposed to moving air, the greater the cooling effect. Space is limited on our cars though, so most go with a 24k gvw rating or run two smaller (19k or so) ones.

Personally I bought a flexalite unit that is 7 1/2 x 20x 3/4 for my project from summit, it's damn big, and shoudl be more then adequate. On a track only car, a cooler this big probably isn't needed, but on a car that will see street duty, I don't know if you can go too big. I've never heard of a tranny getting damaged form running too cool, but too hot, that happens alot.
