You can drive forever on the stock converter if you want.

Obviously, the reason for upgrading is to achieve a more appropriate synthesis of the components in your car with your particular goals. Choose accordingly.

An aftermarket converter would seem to be intended for improved performance, whereas the OEM converter is intended to balance performance, durability, and fuel economy (with cost considered too). You would not be hurting anything to drive around on the OEM converter until you can decide on the appropriate upgrade for your car.

Formulated is right, you can use the stock stall as long as you want.....but you'll hate it. I ran my cam with the stock stall for nearly a year, but I rarely drive the car (maybe put 2k miles on it in that time). The cam you chose is going to want to idle around 700-800rpm. It will pull against your brakes while stopped in gear (making it feel like you're pushing on the gas and brake at the same time) and your car will feel sluggish under ~3k rpm. Do you have tuning software or are you planning on having it tuned by someone else? Unless you have your own software, you're going to have to tune the car twice. The bigger stall threw my tune way off, especially idle and shift points. I'd wait and do the cam/stall at the same time unless you can tune your own car. My $.02.

Like others have said you can drive with the stock stall, but driveability is horrid. I drove around like this for about 3 months. I was about ready to pull my hair out. Get a Stall ASAP. Or wait until the got the cash to purchase both at the same time.

I don't think I've ever been in a cammed A4 car that wasn't stalled too. I'm sure with a 228 cam you could get away with it though, just make sure you've got a tuner lined up that can do driveability tuning.
