So, is a stall convertor the same as a torque convertor???

stall converter puts you in your power band faster and keeps you there longer. It multiples your tq while in that power band also.
thus you haul a@@
you can get one anywhere from 2800-4600 for daily drivers.

Here is a good start on an explanation: http://www.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm
then go here: http://www.converter.cc and read the FAQ section. That will explain everything.
A torque converter is a great mod for A4 cars, arguably the best. Call Mike at Yank, tell him about your car and what you want to do with it, then go with what he recommends.

Officer I plan on getting one too, but I plan on doing other things 1st.....From what I read it adds a lot of power, and also the frames of our cars are notorious for turning into pretzels....So before I get a TC/SC I want to get some Kenny Brown or Global West Sub Frame Connectors a strut tower brace and maybe some other parts thats will strengthen up my cars frame. Like you my car will be a daily driver and all year round driver, and with the miles you put on your car I would think its necessary to get your frame stronger......So once I get that stuff I will look in a TC with about a 3000 stall and a 2.1 or 2.5 stall thing. Supposedly recommended for daily drivers.....Oh yeah with this new found power, you might need new tires that will be able to catch with this new mod. Just hoping the Michelin Pilot Sport 285/35/18's will catch when I get a set of Z06 rims.....
the smallest stall i would reccomend for a daily driver would be the 2800vig cause she really stalls to 3200!
if you looking at yanks, i wouldnt get anything below 3000. The ST3500 are nice, but i would reccomend a vig3200 for price reasons and it hauls butt!! Most of the guys here are yank fans, but Vigs are awesome so give them a look also
converters dont give you more HP! The only keep you in your powerband but they give you more tq!! some cars loose a few HP with stall, but make it up in TQ

I heard something like if I have a 2800 convertor, them my car wont take off till it hits 2800 RPMs?? Is this true?
If it is, must be a pain in the A$$ to do a good parking job...

Nope, not true.
Think mushy. Throttle responce will be soggy. On a hill there is a good chance you'll roll back from a stop, where with a normal converter you'd either hold still or slightly roll foward. Bigger stall is usually "looser" or mushier.
The motor will rap up faster with a stall converter, since its lighter and its polar moment of inertia is lower.

no you dont hit 2800rpms before you move.. cause if that was the cause i would literally hate anything above 3k, and the 4400 guys would have hell
the bigger the stall, the more it seems like your slipping a clutch. I like to think of it this way, the more stall, the more it feels like its slipping waiting for you to FLOOR the sucker
but with my 3600vig i will break loose at 1900-2k if i hold my foot on the brake and raise my idle up.
i couldnt even notice the 2800yank so i had to get higher. In my opinion anything around 3200-3600 is perfect for street! Best advice, go drive a car with a stall of 3500 or so and see how it feels to you! You cant base if ones streetable because someone says it is
