Default Which is looser: SY3500 or ST3500.

In part-throttle daily driving, is the ST or SY 3500 going to feel looser (i.e. need more throttle)?

It is my understanding that a higher STR makes the converter feel tighter so by this reasoning the 2.5 of the ST would be tigher than the 1.6 of the SY. However, it is also my understanding that a larger diameter converter also feels tigher/more normal so the 10" SY would feel tigher than the 9.5" for ST.

Anybody know? Thanks,

The SY 3500 is going to be looser.

Yes, I have experience with both, and I’m currently running a SY3500 and I can tell you the SY will feel looser.

Driven them both. The SY 3500 is a little looser. They are close enough that if the SY is the converter that best meets your needs, buy it.

I have been struggling with the whole 3500 stall thing since it seems to me (after extensive research) that a Y3000 might be best for me. However, most people seem to recommend going higher than you think you want and most subsequently increase stall from 3000 (and many even from 3500).

My car is a daily driver with some town/traffic use and I really don't want ojectionable looseness although some is OK (I realize this definition is extremely subjective).

Even though I do go to the track every couple of months (where I still cannot get traction) it is the street where I really want performance. My problem with the ST3500 is that I just cannot see EVER hooking with it - even with Nitto DR's (which is as far as I want to go with tires). This will just get worse as I continue to mod.

So if I get something bigger than the Y3000 I really think that a SY3500 is the right converter for me if I can stand the looseness.

I really like the SY3500, but yes you will notice that it is looser than stock. A loud exhaust makes it more noticable. If you didn't have a tach and had a quiet exhaust, you would adapt in 10 minutes because you wouldn't think about it.

If you get the SY 3500 and it is too loose, you can either add 3.73s or use Edit to change your part throttle shift points and lock-up. After I was done with Edit, It felt like I dropped 300 rpm off my stall when just riding around in town.

Good luck in your choice, the Y3000 is a nice converter too, but the low STR of the SY is really nice for stoplight racing.
