How does the stall converter work?

2. Yes & no. At low speed no; but the car will creep at low rpms. At high speeds yes; on the highway rpms are lower because the converter locks-up, eleiminating the stall - feels just like an M5 (A4s do not have the really big overdrive gear like your M6).
3. Yes. The stall will allways keep the engine in the power band. Using the 3500 example, if you punch it from a roll you will never drop below 4500 rpm. It also provide extra torque on the upshifts.
4. Yes. A4s kick butt at the track. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
If you want overdrive, the built 4L60e is your best value. Popular choices are to get one from FLP, Yank, or Speed. If you want a strong track car (i.e. you can live with no overdrive) a TH 400 will be much more reliable.
5. Depends on the converter. I mash mine from around 2500 rpm.
Could you eloborate more on how you launch on off the line.. like do you put it in nuetral then rev to 2800, on green drop in gear? or do you guys like hold the brake and rev up the engine, then release the brake on green etc?
Could you walk me through your launching tactics?
Also how do you do your burnouts? Right now I dump the clutch and left toe the brake petal while feeding the throttle etc..when done I let off the brake. Do you just put in neutral, push the brake petal, rev it, then put in gear? I would think the TC would like jerk the car forward no?
Thanks again, I've been reading info on the auto trans and TC all afternoon, great brain food <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

NO, power brake, put it in first give it gas until it spins, you have to vary the pressure on the brake until you get it just right or get a line lock.
don't rev and throw it in gear, that will kill a auto real quick.
I have always driven manual cars, I even learned to drive on a stick for the first time when I was like 14 yrs old.
Anyway could anyone answer these "Stall Converter for Dummies" questions:
1. I hear about these 3500 or 4400 Stall converters, now from my understanding that means that the car will idle but not catch 1st gear until thr rpms hit 3500?
2. Is there a way to turn the stall thingy on and off? because how can you ease up to the staging light etc?
3. If I'm driving at like 60mph and I floor it WOT, does the stall converter do anything? Or is it really only used to launch off the line?
4. I currently have a M6 2002 SS, I think I am really getting tired of shifting. Also my 60' times at the track jsut cannot compete to the A4 guys. It seems like such a huge advantage to have an automatic etc. I would like to buy a automatic what is a good brand or model to buy, if I plan on having like 450 RWHP Max?
5. how do you launch the Stall converter at the track? do you stage then just rev the engine up to almost where your stall converter is set for, then on the green floor it? Hows does it work?
Thanks for answering these questions I'm like a dolt when it comes to racing automatics. I'm really pretty new to the whole drag racing scene aswell.
Thanks.

Just for contrast, when I had a ST 3500, it launched best by stalling to 800 rpm and hammering it from there. You'll have to experiment.
If traction isn't perfect, then you'll roll into the throttle.
