what is this called?
I changed my out put shaft seal yesterday, simple. I got under her today to re torque the u-joint bolts? that hold the drive shaft up onto the yoke? anyway, i was inspecting the seal and found there to be a seam right before the drian pan looking forward. it looks like a the rear of the tranny is removeable, 6-8 bolts? I had a drip from that seam, whats in there? Im sure I have the seal, it cant be harder than changing the waterpump?
Yup transmission tailshaft, mines was removed when the trans was in the car. If you have a leak there, you might have a hairline crack where the transmission bushing rests. I had one and the whole piece got replaced as well as a new bushing.
check this thread, it has some pictures and useful info regarding that piece. https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/557976-i-have-small-problem.html
i just broke that piece in half last week. it's not hard to replace in the car at all. 6 15 mm bolts hold it to the tranny. drain the tranny fluid, pull the driveshaft (don't even need to unbolt tq arm from rearend), drop the trans crossmember, tranny mount and you're there. i removed the tailshaft housing in ~ 1 hour on the garage floor - using a lift would DEFINATELY be quicker. assembly was more complicated as i added an al driveshaft (included u joint replacement) and i have true duals running under everything.
