Does ATF go bad the older it gets?

Just wanted to know if you have say a 12-15 year old car with low mileage, say under 15k, with the original ATF. Should it be changed just because of age? Or would you leave it alone if it appears clean?

In short, if it looks good & smells ok, leave it alone.......
