Default tranny question

I own a 00 Z28 A4. Car has 84,000 on her. I serviced trans around 4000 miles ago. I noticed when I have the shifter in 1st gear it stays in that position until shifted into 2nd. That part is fine. I noticed that if I have the shifter in 2nd and take off from a dead stop, I never hear or feel the trans shift out of first and into 2nd and stay there. Feels like it's taking off already in 2nd. I just always drive the car in over drive. The other day I was playing with the other gears and discovered this. Sound normal or do I have a problem ? Thanks

My understanding is that with the 4L60E, the tranny will not shift 1-2 when you put the car into 2nd gear. It will shift 1-2-3 from 3rd and over course, 1-2-3-4 from 4th, but will not shift 1-2 from 2nd, so what you are stating is normal.

So I guess it's working like it supposed to. Very odd though. Thanks.

I have noted that some not all 4l60e transmissions do that ,

i think the 98s start in 1st in 1, and start in 1st in 2 but will shift to 2nd. i believe 99-02 have 2nd gear start where it actually starts in 2nd if the shifter is in 2....

When you put it in 2nd you are actually starting in 2nd. You should be able to feel the difference.

It depends on the year of the car, and the later ones got that feature.
