Has anyone ever done this conversion? Is their a cheaper way to do this?
The cheapest kits that I have seen are around $500. I seen a cheaper conversion on JTR's website but it didn't look very efficient or tough.
It would be cheaper just to use a 700R-4 that already has a VSS and an attachment for a cable driven speedometer rather than using the modified 4L60E tailshaft.
The tailshaft is a GM part, and I could definately get it cheaper since I have dealer pricing connections through GM. I don't have any part numbers from them though.
Any suggestions?

Well I have seen a few 4l60e tail shafts that were actually drilled one the metal gear was removed and you could I suppose put a plastic drive gear on it , But thats provided you have and earlier 1 peice case 4l60e , Im not sure how you would do that with a late bolton and ls1 type
