Default need help figuring out stall problem

ok this might be a dumb question but i would appreciate it if someone could help me with it...to make it short i have an 86 camaro with a 355 and a TH350 tranny..the tranny has a shiftkit and what they told me when i bought it was a 6500 stall converter...the engine is a 355 with full boltons...yet i've never ran faster than a 16 sec. 1/4....i don't know much about stall converters but my guess is that it's wayyy too big and thats what is slowing me down...i think the car should at least run mid 12's and probably faster than that...so could someone tell me if that's the problem?

I would say a 6500 stall with and lt-1 engine is way high unless the engines been built to turn and awfully lot of rpms well in excess of 6500 rpm which is generally as much as a stock bottom end lt-1 can handle forlong. I cant say its all your problem but I would suggest you bring that stall down to the 3000 to 4000 range and Hopefully you have some gears in the 355 to 410 range ,

i forgot to mention the gears, when i bought it they said it has 4.56 gears which i can believe cause i've never been able to push it much higher than 125-130 mph///the motor is out of a 78 z-28 too if that makes a diff.
