Yes you will probably want gears,Alot of guys in here seem to like IN THE 323 TO 373 range, I personally like 410s, And Im making the assumption the track runs wont be on street tires and your planning some suspension mode and alot of power mods ,
Personally , I would start with the trans and converter, (foundation) Then rear end (backwards to some veiws) Then I would start the suspension mods to put it on the ground, Then start the power bolts ons etc,

Im sure others may think a different order of build up but i here everyday I just got my turbo or this or that and my stock POS 4L60E took a crap and I know thats fustrating so I say work from th bottom up , Built to take the power then work to make it , Perhaps not as imediatly gratifying but alot less fustrating
