If your talking about the later style sprag that is way way late. i haven't heard too much about failure in the od sprag with the later style, but i do know that the older hat style does interchange with it. and yes under hot heavy load situations (mostly heavy trucks pulling a hill situations) the rear sections would have lube starvation problems. in fact if you open the driver side door on an early truck a sticker says do not tow in O/d, (because of that). yes i will agree with you there the early does have the interchangability yes (which consists of a pump, interediate shaft and center support) but the later model stuff you can still buy from gm brand spankin new. so.....

I have beat the **** out of mine and it takes it like a champ! But it is built for *** whippings. A 4l60 would have puked a long time ago.

anythingL80E>anythingL60E

and I own a 65E myself.... If I wasnt an idiot, I would have haf FLT build me an *)E and do the conversion the first time rather than going through two of their level 5 65's so far.... great trans's but 4500#'s + N2O = boom....

I think some of the confusion of early vs. late being better is over the lube circuit. If for hauling/towing, I would consider the newer style.

I doubt there is any durability difference for normal driving use in a car. Assuming you had any kind of power to actually need this trans, wide open OD usage would only be possible for a very short time.... unless you had a place to run 100+mph for miles on end. Most usage would be for economy only.

The early front coolant lines are much easier to adapt on the f-body. I got the early style for this reason.

Im using the early model 4L80. Adapted the fittings to AN and it works like a champ.

I have a Hughes-built 80E with the TCI T-Com controller and I love it. I've only thrown 501rwhp at it so far, but the T-trim is hear and I'm expecting at least 600rwhp the next go around. I love the tranny, and have it set to lockup over 45mph and at WOT above 45. Best of both worlds!
