Default Lockup

What exactly locks up the converter? Does the line pressure variate or what's the story? I'm a noob, I have a TH400 in the 67, and a T56 in the TA, so I have to ask. Just wondering. Thanks fellas.

There is an actual clutch inside the torque converter that "grabs" or locks, stopping the slipping that the unit normally does.

A solenoid causes a valve to move applying a clutch not so different in principle than the clutch in your standard and makes the coupling direct straight through just like the clutch in your car
