Default Converted FWD Converters

http://www.torqueconverterparts.com/...urnal01-02.pdf

The shop gets a 245mm core, then welds all this stuff on to make it fit(see p6 ad)

The real size of a LS1 TC is 298mm.

Just some info for ya.

Uhm, have to break it to you, but all aftermarket converters are done this way. Everyone uses a smaller OE core to make the 245mm converters (typically found on I4s). It is too costly for aftermarket companies to make new impeller, turbine, pump assemblies from scratch. This has been going on since 1960, and will continue. The goal is try and find a core that requires the least modification, this ensures a profit. Obviously the impeller hub, turbine hub, pilot hub and drive lugs are a must!

this is not ground breaking news. the R&D and quality are what seperates the good converter brands from teh junk. even the 1K dollar big dog lockup tripple disc blah blah converters are nothing but s10, sunfire, etc stall converters. the good units have good upgraded clutches, antiballoning plates, bearings, and billet covers.

those cheapies are nothing but cheap oem's.

Small diameter is the single best way to increase stall speed. The added bonus is that you get a much lighter converter to help the engine spin faster. If the right components are used, these converters will handle gigantic amounts of power.
As a side note, the LS1 converter (with the exception of the c5) is actually 300mm. The c5 was 298.
