Default Any one auto-cross with a stalled a4?

Im looking to sign up for an event that includes 5 events. One of them is auto-cross. My problem is that if i beat on my car on the street for about 5 mins the temp goes to 210. I dont know the size of the cooler but it is huge. The trans and converter work fine and its normally at 150-170 around town, and from 110-130 on the high way. Any ideas? Would an aluminum pan help any
?

Do you have aux fans on the cooler and are you still running through the radiator , If you are at least for this event I would consider installed the aux fans on the cooler and bypassing the radiator .But since its gets cold there when done I would switch it back ,

I was wondering if it would be good to bypass the radiator? What is the target temp you want the tranny to be at?

An Aluminium pan like TCI's would buy you some more time, but not a lot. It holds more fluid and will reject some heat through the fins.

Maybe you set your fans to run as soon as your coolent hits 160* for this. Its kinda cold for the motor but it would start removing some heat sooner. Do you have a 160 T-Stat?

Aux fans do sound like a good option.

well ideally it would be some where between 140 and 170 but in very cold climates with the radiator bypassed it may not be possible to keep the trans warn enough and some pcm will disable lockup till the trans reaches operatiing temperature .

Speaking from experience, you will not overheat your trans with a stall. I used to have a Vig3200 and I Auto-X my 2001 Camaro SS every other month. The course is so short (about one minute or less) that the trans will not heat up much. Most I saw was about 20 degrees, from (IIRC) 120-140 on the first run, to 160-180 by the third and final run. All hot lapped. I have a B&M 24K cooler going through my OE cooler. This was during the hot months of SoCal. Now Road Racing, you WILL need a better cooling setup for your trans. I saw temps range from 170-235 at Willow Spring International Raceway, during the month of March.

I do have a 160 t-stat. The fans are set to kick on at 160. The cooler is mounted in front of the radiators right now. When they are running i can feel plenty of air sucking past the trans cooler. After the temp gets to about 205 i let off, never really have tested it to see how high would go. Im running a stock pan,i was going to get the aluminum anyway. See if that helps. If not i do have a fan for the cooler, just doesnt look like there would be any room to install it.

With past experience on Road Race units, I would use the Monolec 7500 transmission oil from Lubrication Engineers. This fluid runs cooler, does not foam, and lubricates better. Road racing can be very hard on the planetaries. Deeper pan will not do much here. A good cooler would be preferred.

I auto-x'ed my car for $hits and giggles once. It was about 90* outside, I had a tranny cooler, 160 stat and earlier fan settings. I did not have a tranny temp guage. Although I did the whole thing in 2nd gear, I did not notice the temps abnormally high, each run was only a few minutes anyways.

It's was an SCCA event and I would assume would be similar to what your doing.

Anyone else have experience with Monolec 7500 transmission oil. Just want to see more feedback from sponsors. Ive been told by my local trans experts FLT to only run non-synthetic fluid.

Well while I haven't used that particular fluid I have used both synthetic and natural and honestly to me they seem to perform the same and ive seen both hit 100000 miles and do fine , Personally though I also don't see the justification for the cost difference in performance so I just use dexron
