Default Temp Guage Question

This will be my only guage (electrical). Does the guage HAVE to be a trans temp guage or can it be like a engine oil temp guage? Will it read different? Are they all the same but just labeled for each? Reason im asking is someone selling a engine oil temp guage local for cheap and if I can use it why spend $75 more on a new one if they all work the same?

My water temp gauge and tranny temp gauge look the exact same...just a different label. The sending unit is also the exact same. It should work just fine.

does the car monitor the tran's temp so that if you had a tuner/scan tool you could monitor through that?

The temp sender and gauge are identical, the variance comes from the calibrate range output for each application (Engine, Water, Trans). They all read accurately the same when they are at (for example) 170 degrees. Just remember, or remind your passenger's, that it is trans fluid temp and not engine oil temp.
