Stall With a Cam??
I just bought a tsp231/239 cam. I really dont want to get a stall for it because i really just drive the car on the streets and am not as interested as putting up the numbers at the track. Most people say that I will definatley need to run one though. Do I really have to???
With a big cam you want a higher stall converter for few reasons:
1- To keep the engine in the RPM range where your new cam makes the most power while at WOT..
2 – With a bigger cam you will have to raise you’re idle. That cam will idle well at ~800rpm or so. With the stock converter and that idle rpm your car will always be trying to pull away while you are stopped at a light.
Put the cam in and see how you like it. You can always go with a 2800rpm stall later.

Coming from a guy that ran a decent sized cam on the stock converter for awhile, it CAN be done but it's a royal pain in the *** to drive & I'd never do it again. Even raising the idle to 700rpm (your cam will want 800-850) will pull against the brakes like a *****....feels like you're constantly powerbraking it. You'll have to put it in neutral every time you come to a stop. Your car will be no faster than stock until you reach ~3000rpm and then it'll take off. With a 3500ish stall, your car will be A TON more fun to drive on the street, it's manners at idle will be 100% better, and you'll be a lot faster. Get a converter, you'll regret it if you don't---trust me.

I drove around cam only with no stall for a year. It sucked, not just holding it at a stop but braking distance was longer because of the car wanting to 'go', it didn't run too much faster because it took me forever to get in the powerband with a stock stall. If you do a cam without it, well, its pretty much a waste. I drive my car about 20k a year with a 3500 stall, no problems. I do wish my exhaust wasn't so loud though!!
You'll will love the big stall. I have a SS w/ stock stall and my formy has a 4k yank and there's not much different in driveability. I have a tight TC and it drive great on the street. When you do go to the track you'll love it even more.
