Is this a Transmission problem?
Is this a Transmission problem? I've got a 97 LT1 A4. I have had this car for about 5 months and the transmission has shifted and worked great so far. No check engine lights or anything. The car is a 3.23 gear but on the highway, I am running almost 2500 rpm at about 76-78 MPH. According to all the charts and math I have seen, it should be running between 2200-2300 at that speed. According to the charts, if my rear gear ratio was about 3.50, my speed to rpm would be correct. This morning I took the cover off the rear and counted the ring and pinion teeth and I have 42 - 13 confirming there is definatly a 3.23 in the rear end. Does this sound like there could be a problem with the transmission causing it to run at a higher rpm than it should or is this normal? What do you other 3.23 A4 guys run at those speeds? Anybody have any ideas?
The tire diameter is stock and is correct. It is possible the tach is wrong. At idle, it is where it should be though. So I don't think that is it but anything is possible.
Check to make sure your torque convertor is locking up. To do it: get on a steady speed on the highway (no cruise control though). Then, without lifting your foot off the gas, lightly tap the brake. You will see the RPM's go up when the torque convertor unlocks.
