Default Bearing Heater for 12-bolt install rather than press

I was talking to my father, and where he works there is a work-shop with a press. I told him I needed it to press the bearings for the axles of my 12-bolt. Well he suggested that I use the bearing heater instead. I never heard of this method, but from what I hear it is a much safer way of properly placing a bearing. Also, the machine is portable, so I can bring it home. Pretty cool, anyone ever use one of these?

I wouldn't use the old gas axe as a bearing heater. The bearings have dust seals and plastic pieces on them. I had mine pressed on no problem, it was really easy. The retaining ring requires a little more force because that keeps the bearing from slipping off more than anything.

Hmmm. I guess plastic and a heater wouldn't mix very well.
