Default Rebuilding a th350.

I plan on rebuilding my th350 in the upcomming month. I do have some questions on it though. Ive never dived into a tranny before, but I have been a mechanic before I joined the Marines. If I have a rebuild video or book is this something basicly a monkey could handle, or is it harder than it seems.
My trans problem is that 1st gear just let go when I was warming up my tires at the track. I figured I would buy an overhaul kit and have at it. I would also like suggestions on parts for the trans. It currently has a reverse manual valve body.....and no first gear. Everything else works fine, and I drove it home from the track like that, about 50 miles. Any info helps me here, cause this is all new territory to me.

A friend of mine rebuilt his own TH350, using a video that he got from Summit. It has held up well behind a roots blown SBC. He said the toughest part of the build was cleaning everything.

Sounds like you broke the low roller clutch, not much you can do to upgrade that, that I know of. How much power do you think you have?

You need a book for illustrations and torque specs IMO.

I'd say take it apart and see what the problem is, think about how much power you have, and think about a th400.

Well I had a hotcam with unported ls2 heads and bolt ons at the time. This year it will be trex with ported ls2 heads. Should I be pissed at the trans shop or is this just something that happens?

It depends on what the problem is. I have a 5 gallon bucket of used low rollers and they are all used and all like new.
I did a rebuild for a kid at work once, told him it'll handle anything his stock 305 could throw at it, he broke the low roller TWICE. He later admitted to neutral dropping it.
So maybe if you have major wheel hop or something shocking the trans in first that could be the problem. But it needs to come apart so you can see whats really wrong with it and go from there.

Is this the type of thing where I can dive into it and keep parts in order, to see what broke? I remember putting it from p to 1st it would hit pretty hard and I thought that was weird.

Yes, it's fairly easy. You could get it apart at least, ask questions here if you need to, by then you'll know whether or not it's something you think you can do. Then spend money on a book and parts.
