Default cleaning out a converter

Does anyone know what to use to flush out or clean out a converter?Do transmission shops have a special way to do this?I have been told to use kerosen or deisel but I'm not sure about this.If a tranny shop can flush it out it would be better, but I know they usually replace them. But if a new trans messes up then they have to clean them someway. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks

A trans shop usually has a converter rebuilder. Lucky for me the converter rebuilder for most of the state is near by and I've had a few cut open, cleaned out and rebuilt. They even let me watch the whole process one saturday.
It's been a few years but a lock up rebuild used to run around $80-$120 with all new bearings, washers, and clutch.
I would not flush a lock up out with solvent, it might eat the glue that holds the friction material on.
I have flushed non lock up converters out with mineral sprits, etc. Making sure to flush all the solvent out with atf.
I wouldn't flush anything out that had a major failure.

Its for a th350,nothing is wrong with it I just want to clean it out before installing it.It is a used converter and I'm just making sure its clean before it goes back in.If a tranny shop cant flush it I'll try mineral spirits. Thanks

Just let it sit open end down in a clean bucket for a while. If the fluid doesn't have metal in it, just let it continue to drain and don't worry about flushing it.

If metal has gotten into the converter, opening it up is the only way to get it all out. That being said, you'll probably be fine just flushing it out. If I were putting in a new tranny I'd make sure there wasn't any debris in there.

its used & dont know old? i would get it rebuilt/cleaned the right way by having it opened up. why take a chance. $100ish to get it rebuilt & know that it really is good. compared to $30 flush, put it in, doesnt work, take it back out, and have it rebuilt anyway.
