Default Pro builders Q

Who here replaced the front pump seal retainer once its off? They are on there pretty good and think they may lose some grip if re-used?

remeber the old days before the clip and guys would screws in around the lip to hold them in under hard towing even with the feed hole bored.Anyone do that?

thanks for your response

This retainer is mainly a holdover from the early 700R4 days, when the drainback hole was too small and when hot they would possibly push the seal out. This "helped" somewhat, but once the seal started to let go this did not help much. Nowadays with the Teflon bushing, redesigned front seal, and bigger drainback hole, better transmission coolers, etc., the retainer is more or less just a hold over.

Red loctite on the seal OD works for me.
A transmission builder once criticized me for suggesting this, saying it makes getting it out more difficult. I didn't say anything but you shouldn't need to replace it that often unless your builds are failing.
I've taken them out before, not a problem, never had one blow out either.

I reinstall them all the time. I personally have never had one come loose nor have I ever had a seal blow out on a 4l60e. But then again I always use an arbor press to install my seals and bushings. If you choose to reinstall the retainer, make sure that it has very good resistance on the pump lip and also make sure you install it in the correct location. Vince
