quicker ahrder shifts, wont slip nearly as much. you can got hrough the gears manually if you want to but theres no need to. your A4 car is faster in D then going 1-2-3-4

I hate to do this but is it true that if you manually shift an A4 tranny you will burn it up? I have heard both answers

i dunno why you would manually shift your auto. i heard that the shift kit helps but you dont really need it as much as you would a tranny cooler.

you guys are horrible, a good stall for everyday is a 3200 yank or vigilante. when yall do the transgo if its a DD just use one screw and upgrade the servo's and accumulator piston as well.

I usually only do it when I'm messing around or at the track but I have heard from some it will fry the tranny and others that it doesn't hurt it at all.....I'm hoping one of the tranny experts will jump in here.

Manual upshifting should be alright with the shift kit installed. Do not modify the manual shift valve as per instructions, not necessary on 1996 & up units, and do not add the little plugs to the reverse/input piston, this can create problems on motors that go over 5,500 rpm. When downshifting, you must give it throttle the same time you backshift the lever, (this allows the engine and the transmission gear that you pick will match rpm's quickly) then you can let off the throttle to decelerate. This is similar to double clutching a manual transmission. If you do this correctly, you should not hurt the transmission.

manually upshifting is harmless. you can do it whenever you want as far as i know.

manually DOWNSHIFTING is the problem. you're slamming things into gear, and there is no torque management on downshifts. downshifting, even in D, hurts the tranny. in a perfect world in terms of your transmission, it would never downshift.

I can back up choco on the shifting, upshifting is fine, but the downshifting is the problem. i go UP through the egars on my Z28 all the time and its got a 125k mile original A4 tranny and runs smooth and hits hard still and ive been shifting it myself since it had 100k on it.

From my personal experience I had to learn about manual downshifting the hard way. I torched my tranny after two years of lots of abuse. Constantly going down in 1st and 2nd gear alot when racing. Now I have a fully-built tranny and a nice stall that works out quite well for me. Take my advice do not manually downshift your tranny alot. First the synchros will go and then shortly after will be the death of your tranny. As I have said I speak from experience with this matter. Plus the stalled auto makes it ten times more fun to drive without shifting gears.

As stated above manual downshifts are probably not the best for an A4. However the 4l60e does not have synchros, not to bash you. I believe you must be thinking of a manual trans. With these transmissions the input sprag and the low roller take a real pounding when doing this. Also the over run clutch hub likes to break when this style driving is used. Vince
