The pan is the best place to get a good overall reading .

I just put mine in the pressure port in the side of the trans it screws right in. Ive heard people say the temps are the same in the pressure port as the pan by what the PCM is reading with tuning software and ive heard its 5-15 degrees off....I really dont think 5-15 degrees is going to be do or die where my temps are sitting so I went that route.

Update to what I replied about. I had my car tuned today by a friend that was using EFI Live and my sending unit is installed in my pressure port. 95 degrees outside doing all kinds of wot pulls on the highway with my pt4000 that doesnt lock the pcm was showing my trans temps to be cooler than my guage thats wired up to the pressure port. I was reading about 185F with the guage and EFI live said 170-175
