Please help me get this straight....
Hey guys....I bought a 1998 camaro from a friend. It was in a shop for more than a year and about 10 grand later was finished. The orginal problem it had before going to the garage was a bad transmission. In the course of the build, he bought a stage 3 raptor with a torque drive upgrade. The car was out of the shop for about 5 days (about 60-80 miles) before this new transmission crapped out.
Here is the question. Im looking for a new transmission to replace the bad new transmission but Im no automatic specialist and am very confused about the different types. I guess the raptor that went bad was a 4l60e with a 2800 stall. I called a different transmission builder who told me that the transmission should have been a 4l65e. He told me to check the mount holes on the bell housing to identify the 60 vs the 65. The original transmission has a bolt hole at the 12 oclock position which im told is the 4l65e....the dealer who sold the raptor told me its a 4l60e (i have not seen it personally yet as its in a shop)
Would this have cause it to fail if the computer signals were not correct for the installed transmission? How is it possible to install the wrong transmission and what really should be installed in this 98 ls1 camaro. Any information would be a great help. THANKS!!

Who ever told you that a bolt hole at the top of the bell identifies it as a 65 does not know what he is talking about. The ls1 engines have been using this bell and stator combo since 98 and the 65 is exactly the same case as the 60 with different internals. Basically the 65 is rated to be stronger than the 60 using different planetaries and stronger shafts. Look at your RPO codes and look for M30 to confirm this. M30=4l60e M32=4l65e. Maybe you should pass this info along so that this guy can stop misleading good people like yourself to make sales. Good luck in getting your car fixed but the 1998 ecms have had some issues and can be difficult to correct. The 99 and later computers are much better when it comes to the tuning software that is available.
