pry the button out of the top of the shifter. then i think the leather handle part pulls up then you should be able to look and see which way to go from there

^NO.
There is a staple in the middle of the front part of the shifter.
Pull that out and the **** comes straight up.

thats what it shows in a corvette owners manual for the 02 corvettes so i figured it was the same

Yeah the staple is on the front side of the shifter, remove and pull straight up. Easier to see/get to if you turn the key on and put it in first gear.
