Default Need Help! Tranny problem between 65-80mph

I have a 1998 Trans Am A4, basically stock. Today while traveling down the highway at an average of 75mph after about an hour of driving, my car started acting very strange and began to really scare me. When the car runs at around 60mph the RPM sits right at 2000. At 80 it sits at 2500. Today after an hour of driving at around 75-80, it suddenly felt like i put the car in Neutral. The car began to slow down and so i gave it a bit of gas to keep it going around 75 and the rpms tached up to around 3000rpm and the car was STILL not accelerating at all (it was like i was freely revving it in Neutral). Then once i got past that it started to pull VERY slowly around 3200 rpm. Obviously the car isn't running right so i immediately off at an exit and turned off the engine. After about a 5 minute break i started it back up and drove it around the town...it runs fine in town. As soon as i got back on the highway and got to the 70-80mph range it started doing the same thing. It seems like the tranny is slipping at the higher speeds. Does anybody know if this is what is going on, or is there anything else this could be?? Thanks

check the fluid condition this is a good indicator of what is going on but it does sound like it was slipping from what you describe

since it only slips at high speeds, do you think it would be okay to drive around normal roads until i can get it replaced since it doesn't have any problems at low speeds? Or would that do more damage to the tranny?

i would take it to a shop and find out why it may be a simple pressure issue with the EPC or something like that which could be fixed before complete failure

Since it fixed itself after turning the switch off I would suspect limp mode. Are you getting and SES light ?
