what is the difference in a 4L60E and a 4L65E???

The main and most important difference are the 5 pin verse 4 pin planets and yes before anyone says I know there are other minor differences but thats the main change of any real importance

What cars/trucks came with the 4l65e ? are they direct replacements for the 4l60e ?

They will direct replace 98 up and trucks started around the same time but not all and the 2006 and 2005 GTO has them.
But if your thinking they are alot stronger stock than a 4l60e they are not. They are just a little better comparably and still suffer from the main failures associated with the 60e.
