Default Is it possible to fill the tranny this way?

I'm not sure if I'm just scared of screwing the tranny up or what but I'm curious if you could fill the tranny with the engine off and then turn the crank manually to pump the fluid through the cooler and out the return line. From what I've been told, its really easy to break a 13 vane pump if air hits it while its running. I figure this would be the best way to insure a pocket of air doesn't destroy the pump.

Unless you can turn the engine more than 500 rpm's there will be no fluid flowing.

Fill it to the full line.
Set the Park brake.
Start the engine.
Leave it in Park.
Fill the transmission to the full line.
Place the selector in each range for a few seconds.
Check the fluid level.
Take it for a drive.

Then park and allow to set for 20 minutes or so start move through gears and recheck fluid in park running.

do you do this with the return line connected to the transmission or do you start the car and let the fluid go through the cooler and out of the return line before connecting to the tranny?

Put fluid in the dipstick like you're supposed to. The filter sits in the fluid. The pump is about 4 inches away from the fluid. If you add fluid through the cooler the pump will actually see it later.
Do it normally and the pump will see fluid less than 30 seconds after start up.
