Default 4L80E in 67 bird

Have a TH400 with reverse manual valve body but was considering going with a 4l80e in my 67 bird (in sig). Shifter? Manual valve body? Apparently the TH400 and 4l80e are almost identical except one is electronically controlled (great) and has OD/lockup (which would be nice). Looking to drive this thing and have it be reliable on the street without running a 40,000 stall going through transmissions every week. Plan to run 29.5x11.50 tires, possibly 3.50 gears in my 9", so lock up would be nice for cruising on the highway. Advice? Recommendations?

You can make anything fit, And they are tough, Full manual is the way to go if you dont want all the exspense of a controller. Lockup can be done I have seen with modified 7004 speed/vacume based lockup kits aftermarket. drivability should be great . Durability awsome.

Thanks for the quick response. That sounds perfect. What about running a line to the button on my shifter for manual lockup? Would that work? I am getting really excited now! Thanks again!

I would not recommend a dedicated manually driven lock up switch... that makes things a little too "busy" for me. A vacuum operated electrical switch is a good option when choosing to go fully manual.

Howver, I would recommend taking the time to explore all of the options. Meaning, there are several manufacturers who make a stand alone controller for that unit. None of which are complicated to install. They all come with a base program from which one would dial in his shift points. I am familiar with some, others I am not.

Give me a call tomorrow if you would like to discuss this mod. We have helped many guys with their conversions!

Good Luck with it, it sounds like a fun car.

Gilbert,
I may have to do that. Was just an idea. Would be nice to keep trans temps low with lockup, but would be even sweeter to have it work automatically. I'm fine with programming shift points, I just cannot stand kick down in a high-powered car. Would be nice to lug it at 2500 in 4th and boost it a bit to accelerate rather than shifting down to 4,000 rpm. Power won't be an issue, it's 8:1, fully forged, will have alcohol injection, studded, you know the works. Somewhere in the range of 800+rwhp. Just need something that'll work right. BTW - Yes, it's a fun project... was fun with the 600rwhp 464ci pontiac I had in it, just too much maintenance on a solid roller setup and lost interest.
