Launching in OD?
Yeah the OD thing was more about the rear sprag which is what we thought it was before we tore it down and then we found out the sprag was perfect and the planets were fubared.
I got the car and planet back today. The planet has 2 hairline cracks going up to 2 different pinons and the center gear was stipped out on it as well. Ill get some pics up tonight so u can see more of what im talking about.
Here is the Strait talk on launching OD D or manual low. Lauching in D or OD there is NO DIFFERNCE! PERIOD!
THE LOW REV. CLUTCH IS HOLDING in park reverse and manual low! So guess what? It is easier on the low sprag to be in manual low because the low rev.clutch is helping the sprag HOLD!
If you put it into manual low, it engauges the overrun clutch! To give you engine braking.
THE SPRAG is holding in ALL foward gears except when the trans shifts into
4th gear! It has nothing to do with OD position on the shifter.
Manual shifting is the safest! For the low sprags sake!
Hope this helps! I am tired of the LIES!

Actually while true for the 700r4 the 4l60e when manually shifting the overrun clutch does as follows- on in manual 1st, off in manual second, on in D3 3rd and off in OD postion reguardless of gear.
Ideally to give the max protection to both sprags but avoid turning the OVERUN CLUTCH on during the 2-3 shift which some say causes a presure drop (we have not noted this in actual recording with the guage, But it does measure right off the pump) You would be best overall to shift manual on the launch and 1-2 shift but as soon as the 1-2 shift completed move imediatley to the OD position.
The overun clutch is never on in the OD position,
So it can be said that manual low one will help protect the low roller and input sprag, Makes no diffeence in second, may protect the overun clutch in D -1st gear . and in D 3rd gear.
None of these postions will protect from a stripped planet.

performabuilt YES!! thank you!
I do not have it in front of me but I am sure my 4l60 book show overrun clutch on in MAN 2nd also. Interesting, you got me thinking?

I used to think that but was corrected by a respected freindi n this business , Bit the change was apparently made to avoid a harsh downshift to second when in manual 2-d gears into second. The diagram is strange looking but if you read the clutch aplication chart you can see it, Which MAY explain why some people have problems on the 2-3 shift in D but not OD
