In no way am I trying to beat up on you (well-maybe a little!). That is a question I have never had come to mind. I always just seem to know.
Which begs the question, why do you need to know? The reason I say that, is if you leave it in OD, the tranny will adjust for the conditions, and you will gain nothing by pulling it into a lower gear in most situations. Now, if you run a higher stall TC, it can be good to keep in 3rd around town to prevent that 3-4 shift/slip that a higher stall TC will do at lower mph.
I dunno how you would rig up lights for the Actual gear, it would be easy to rig up for the gear selector position, however. Hope this helps.

I'm just one of those guys that has to know everything that's going on...
I have an a4 and it drives me crazy not knowing which gear I am in... Is there any way to rig up, say, 4 LED's which light up depending on the gear you're in? Anything?
Please let me know...
Thanks!

Just drive it for a year or two, you'll always know what gear your're in once you get used to it. At least, I do

My A4 seems like it has 6 gears. 1st, 2nd, D3rd, D3rdlockup, OD4th, OD4thlockup. When I have it in OD, I feel all of them as it shifts up when acclerating mildly. At the strip I put it in D3rd, and after the traps I fell it shift to D3rdlockup when I let up off the gas, then shift down to 2nd, and then 1st when I make my turn off the track.
