is this a tranny problem or something else? My 02 Z28 and I have noticed this sound, almost like lifter tick, but only when the car is in neutral, park or held (engine braking) in 2nd gear and as soon as you shift to 3rd or drive it goes away. It does it much more prominently when cold, and it gets less noticeable when hot. Its a very metallic-sounding ticking, like a header gasket or lifter, and it increases proportionally to RPM's, the ticking is not heard under the hood, which makes me want to rule out the header gasket.
I know, I know...manually shifting an auto is dumb and wears them out faster, but I really only do it when driving around campus, harassing pedestrians, imports, throwing revs at the hotties
Am I simply just experiencing "piston slap" which I'm told is common, or is the problem somewhere else?

It is rare for an automatic tranny to be noisy and not be symptomatic.
The only real way to know if it is the source of the noise is to isolate the tranny from the engine and start the engine. This is done by removing the torque converter bolts and sliding the converter as far back into the transmission as it will go. Then starting the engine. If the noise is still there then it is not the transmission.
Most likely, it is a piston slap... put it up to the computer screen and turn the volume up so I can hear it...
